September, 2020

Dear Phil Patron,

Autumn’s nip is in the air and, in any other year, we would be gearing up for our first rehearsal of the season.

But this is a year unlike any we have ever experienced – or hope to experience ever again. Like most, if not all arts groups in Winnipeg and, indeed, around the world, there will be no fall season for the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir. However, that doesn’t mean that the Phil hasn’t been hard at work, devising scenarios that might allow you – and us – to once again experience the joy of choral singing.

While everything depends on the course of this pandemic over the coming weeks and months, our preliminary plan includes a virtual Christmas offering that you will be able to enjoy in the comfort and joy of your own home. And we hope that, come spring, we may able to present a live concert for a live audience. But, of course, all our plans rely on something that is completely out of our control. We will keep you posted here on the website, on social media, and via email (JOIN OUR MAIL LIST).

While we continue to work away on our scenarios, we hope that you and your loved ones stay safe. Please join us in following all the guidelines set out by public health experts and scientists, including continued handwashing, physical distancing, and wearing face masks where required. The safety of our audience (and our choristers!) is of utmost importance, for without you we are only in a constant state of rehearsal.

There’s a song that Pete Seeger adapted from an old hymn tune: “Thru all the tumult and the strife I hear the music ringing; It finds an echo in my soul – How can I keep from singing?” While it’s difficult to imagine right now what the “new normal” will look like for our choir and our audience, we are quite confident that just as our choristers cannot keep from singing, our audience cannot and will not keep from listening.

And so, until we can all be together again, virtually or in person, we wish you and yours good health and harmony.

The Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir, Western Canada’s longest-established adult choral group, has a well-earned reputation for excellence. A choral trademark for the City of Winnipeg, the Phil’s repertoire covers a broad range of music including oratorios, masses, songs, and choral symphonies with a focus on major choral works with orchestral accompaniment. Priding itself on premiering original music, the Phil has commissioned works by composers from both Manitoba and across Canada. The choir has also captivated audiences in Toronto, Vancouver and New York’s storied Carnegie Hall.
